New Requirements for Food Businesses Across all States:

What has changed?

The Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code has implemented crucial changes, highlighted in Standard 3.2.2A Food safety management tools, set to take effect in December 2023. According to these new regulations, every category 1, 2, or 3A food establishment must have a trained and qualified food safety supervisor present at each individual food premises.

Training must be renewed every five years. Only an RTO, such as QMS Audits, can deliver the required units of competency.

Prerequisites

There are no training prerequisites for this course.

How is the course structured?

All of our Food Safety Supervisor courses are fully online and self-directed. This means you have control over your own studies and can complete the qualification at your own pace.

How many Food Safety Supervisors do I need to have on staff?

At QMS Audits, we recommend having at least one food safety supervisor on each shift. This helps ensure compliance even if one person leaves or goes on extended leave.

If you only have one food safety supervisor but run extended shifts or run 7 days a week, it means that person must be available to take phone calls and be available to clarify food safety requirements even when they are not at work. They are responsible for the food safety of the business, even on the days they are not at work, which can be difficult.

What States in Australia need to have a Food Safety Supervisor?

As of December 2023, all states are now required to have a Food Safety Supervisor in their food businesses. Previously, only Victoria, NSW and Queensland were affected by this requirement. This means eligible businesses in Western Australia, South Australia, Tasmania, Northern Territory and ACT must have a food safety supervisor on staff.

What Type of food businesses need to have a Food Safety Supervisor?

The standard applies to food service and closely related retail businesses who are defined as either category one or category two businesses in the standard. General examples include, depending on their activities:

  • Restaurants, cafés, pubs, hotels with table service, takeaway and smorgasbords
  • Supermarkets and delis
  • Takeaway shops
  • Mobile food vendors and juice bars
  • Hospitals and Hospices
  • Aged care facilities
  • Childcare centres

How often do I have to renew my Food Safety Supervisor Training?

Every 5 years. All Food Safety Supervisor Training must be conducted by a Registered Training Organisation, such as QMS Audits. The training must have been completed within the last five years to be recognised by your local council, NSW Food Authority, Safe Food Queensland or your local regulator.

For Food Safety Supervisors who have conducted their training more than five years ago, the quickest and most straight forward way to get a current certificate is to undergo the training again. This will ensure your knowledge is based on the most up to date food safety legislation and techniques.
